Central Healthy Start and Healthy Start of North Central Florida have released the summer 2015 issue of A Healthy Start. Readers can expect to learn valuable information on topics such as prenatal care, water safety and why breastfeeding is best. Designed for pregnant women and mothers of children up to three years old, the bulletins are published twice a year by WellFlorida Council and Healthy Start. Bulletins will be distributed to pediatricians, hospitals and clinics across 16 counties. PDF versions can be downloaded at wwww.centralhealthystart.org and www.healthystartncf.org.

The health fair will emphasize health insurance literacy, opportunities for special enrollment periods in the ACA Marketplace options for coverage through Medicaid and Medicare, and low cost or charity care for people in the coverage gap.

Health Insurance Marketplace Navigators will be on hand to answer questions along with other organizations such as: ACORN Clinic, FL KidCare, HealthStreet, Suwannee River AHEC, and many more.

The fair will take place on August 1, from 11am to 3pm at the Boltin Center in Gainesville.

On August 13, Santa Fe College will be hosting their 3rd Annual Health Information Technology Summit in Building S, Room S-029 (near the SFC Bookstore.) The summit will take place from 9:30am to 11:30am, and there will be four unique sessions with guest speakers.

Topics such as: Information Governance, Privacy/Security, and Data Management will be covered in the sessions. HIM professionals, healthcare staff, IS personnel, administrators, and any interested clinicians are invited to attend.

The Florida Department of Health, Division of Community Health Promotion, is partnering with WellFlorida Council to manage mini-grant distribution and provide technical assistance and expert mentoring services to diabetes self-management education (DSME) programs in Alachua, Bradford, Citrus, Columbia, Dixie, Gilchrist, Hamilton, Hernando, Lafayette, Lake, Levy, Marion, Putnam, Sumter, Suwannee and Union Counties. The purpose of this funding is to expand access to DSME programs for people with diabetes. Funding is available in six categories (see list below). The North Central Florida Cancer Control Collaborative (NFCCC) will be holding a training aimed at community health workers (CHW). There will be three training topics covering: how to get certified as a CHW in Florida, motivational interviewing techniques and the best practices for community health workers. The training will be held at the Santa Fe College Center for Innovation and Economic Development on July 29 from 9:00AM to 5:00PM.

Travel scholarships are available. Please RSVP by July 22 to ensure a spot.

The North Central Florida Safety Net Healthcare Providers Directory has recently been updated. This directory lists free or affordable healthcare providers in North Central Florida.

Many individuals fall short of qualifying for assistance from Medicaid, tax credits, or other cost-sharing reductions offered through the Marketplace. WellFlorida created the directory to better assist its Health Insurance Marketplace Navigators in helping low-income adults and children who fall into Florida’s coverage gap to obtain healthcare.

Join WellFlorida and Healthy Start for the screening of Dark Side of the Full Moon; a poignant documentary on postpartum depression as well as a range of other mental health issues mothers face during and after pregnancy. Since these issues effect not only mothers but those around them, comprehensive education is crucial to understanding what women deal with and giving them the support they need. The documentary is being shown on Tuesday, May 26 at 6:30 p.m. at the Hippodrome Theater in Gainesville.

Marion County residents are invited to share their views on health and healthcare in their community by taking a 10 to 15 minute survey. A partnership of healthcare facilities and WellFlorida Council, the regions’ health council and consultant for health causes, are conducting the survey from April to June 2015. Residents’ input will be used to assess Marion County’s most pressing health needs and to develop a community health improvement plan for the county.
