Free Webinars on Radon Mitigation

On March 19 and March 26, the NC Radon Program is offering two free webinars that focus on reducing the risk of radon gas exposure in Florida homes, workplaces and other buildings. The webinars are being promoted by WellFlorida’s North Central Florida Cancer Control Collaborative and is relevant to the 2020-2025 Florida Cancer Plan, Goal 9.

The purpose of Goal 9 is to:
Reduce radon gas exposure in all Florida households, workplaces and other buildings.
● Objective 9.1: By 2025, increase the annual number of homes measured for radon from 11,570 to 14,080 homes (increase by 4% annually).
● Objective 9.2: By 2025, increase the annual number of homes mitigated for radon from 1,190 to 1,440 homes (increase by 4% annually).
● Objective 9.3: By 2025, increase the number of local jurisdictions that have adopted radon resistant construction standards from 8 to 13 jurisdictions (increase by 10% annually).
● Objective 9.4: By 2025, increase the number of Florida real estate transactions that include radon testing from 6,500 to 7,500 in five years (increase by 3% annually).

The purpose of these webinars is to discuss mitigation systems for radon exposure, the number one cause for lung cancer among non-smokers, according to the EPA. The NC Radon Program’s free webinars offer essential steps to reduce and mitigate radon exposure in your home, workplace or other buildings.

The first webinar will be held on Thursday, March 19 from 11 to 11:30 a.m. (EST). Learn how to evaluate an existing radon mitigation system, specifically for a single family home, from Bruce Snead, director of Engineering Extension at Kansas State University.

The second webinar will be held on Thursday, March 26 from 11 to 11:30 a.m. (EST). Kansas Radon Program Coordinator Brian Hanson will discuss how to evaluate existing radon mitigation systems in your home or building.

Radon mitigation systems have been installed in homes since the early 1990s. If not properly maintained, many of those systems may not be operating properly. Lean how to protect your home, workplace or other buildings from radon gas exposure through the free webinars offered by the NC Radon program in collaboration with WellFlorida’s North Central Florida Cancer Control Collaborative.
