Meridian Behavioral Healthcare has received a federal grant to establish an Affordable Care Act navigator program.

Meridian will receive received $549,800 annually — and up to about $1.65 million over a three-year grant cycle — to hire navigators to help clients of the mental health and substance abuse counseling organization and members of the community at large sign up for health care coverage through the Affordable Care Act.

The U.S. Department of Health & Human Services this week awarded nearly $10 million in annual federal taxpayer-funded grants for “navigator” programs throughout Florida. The programs are designed to help citizens with the upcoming third year of Affordable Care Act enrollment.

The Hospital District trustees are making progress in their effort to address chronic illnesses and other health problems that plague Marion County.

The trustees recently hired a Massachusetts-based nonprofit and tasked it with three jobs: help organize the district’s efforts to determine the best way to address the county’s healthcare problems; help select local groups that need funding to help tackle these problems; and find ways to measure whether the district’s efforts are productive.

Families wishing to drop their Florida Healthy Kids insurance plans can purchase new plans through the Obamacare marketplace, Florida Healthy Kids officials said.

The special enrollment period ends Nov. 30.

The Florida Healthy Kids insurance plan is scheduled to dramatically increase in the cost of its premium on Oct. 1, 2015 for those who have the full-pay option plan. Healthcare.gov is now allowing those families who will be experiencing the rate increase to qualify for a Special Enrollment Period (SEP) on the Health Insurance Marketplace.
