Meeting the Needs of Individuals with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities in Florida

There are more than 21 million individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD) living in Florida today. In partnership with WellFlorida Council, Florida Developmental Disabilities Council, Inc. (FDDC) recently released three reports focusing on the state’s current status and goals to meet the needs of individuals with I/DD.

The Five Year State Plan 2022-2026 Comprehensive Review and Analysis offers an in-depth Florida profile of the current population and unmet needs of individuals with I/DD, available resources, and achievable goals for the state to reach increased inclusivity for all persons with I/DD. The top priorities emerged from national and state-wide data and stakeholder input (focus groups, key interviews and surveys) from persons with I/DD, their families, and the people who support them. Data collected for the report by WellFlorida can be found within the Technical Appendix.

The FDDC Five-Year State Plan 2022-2026 provides a snap shot of the top five priorities and a statewide plan to address them. The top priorities are to:

• Connect Florida’s individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD) and their families to services and resources
• Develop quality standards and improve access to services and supports needed to live outside of an institution and in a setting of choice
• Create a sustainable partnership between the developmental disability and aging networks
• Empower persons with I/DD by increasing the number of and training for self-advocates
• Respond to broad systems change and emerging needs for persons with I/DD and their families
