Central Healthy Start and Healthy Start of North Central Florida have released the winter issue of A Healthy Start. Designed for pregnant women and mothers with children up to age three, the bulletins are published by WellFlorida Council and Healthy Start. Topics include birth spacing, gestational diabetes, birth plans, coping with crying and more. Both English and Spanish versions of the bulletin are available at www.CentralHealthyStart.org as well as www.HealthyStartNCF.org. The 23rd Annual Rural Health Educational Summit, hosted by Florida Rural Health Association (FRHA), will be held from Feb. 28 to March 1 at the University of North Florida Adam W. Herbert University Center in Jacksonville, Florida. WellFlorida and the Suwannee River Area Health Education Center are sponsoring a Diabetes Self-Management Education and Support (DSMES) webinar series that will feature two different dates and topics presented by Mary Ann Hodorowicz RD, LDN, MBA, CDE, CEC.

The first webinar will be on Feb. 13, and will focus on increasing reimbursements through Medicare. Diabetes healthcare professionals will learn more about earning Medicare dollars for Diabetes Self-Management Training.

Coordinated Intake and Referral (CI&R) is a program supported by the Florida Maternal, Infant and Early Childhood Home Visiting Initiative (MIECHV) and provided by Healthy Start of North Central Florida Coalition. CI&R joins families with children ages 5 and under to services in Alachua County that aim to help families succeed. Initiated in 2016, the program is available to the public at UF Health-Pediatrics at the Children’s Medical Services (CMS) clinic and at the Mother Baby Unit at UF-Shands.

North Central Florida has the highest cancer mortality rate in the state, according to the North Central Florida Cancer Report 2016  produced by WellFlorida for the North Central Florida Cancer Control Collaborative (NCFCCC). The report includes a wide range of cancer data such as cancer death rates, incidence rates and related emergency room visits. It also illustrates disparities between the region and Florida as well as disparities between genders, races, ethnicities and counties.
